In Canada, you can start working on-campus jobs only once your academic program begins. It’s important to note that you cannot begin work before your studies kick off. Your study permit must explicitly state that you are permitted to work either on-campus or off-campus while pursuing your education. You are eligible to work on-campus in Canada without the need for a separate work permit if:

A public post-secondary institution like a university, college, CEGEP in Quebec, or a technical school.
A Canadian private institution that is authorized to award degrees under provincial legislation.
A private or public institution or secondary school in Quebec that offers qualifying programs of nine hundred hours or more.
A private post-secondary institution operating under the same regulations as public institutions in Quebec.

Having a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN) is mandatory.

Part-Time Students Working Full-Time in Canada

If you were a full-time student throughout the earlier semesters of your program but switched to part-time status in your final semester to finish your courses, you are allowed to work unlimited hours on-campus during this period.

Guidelines for Off-Campus Work Situations

If you stop being a full-time student, though there are exceptions during your final semester if you fulfill specific criteria
If your study permit has expired

Once you resume full-time studies and meet all on-campus work qualifications, you regain eligibility to work on campus. On-campus employment allows you to work in any facility located in your primary school campus. If your institution has multiple campuses, you are generally restricted to working on the campus where you are enrolled. However, exceptions are available if you are a teaching or research assistant or if your employment is tied to a research project.

Typical on-campus jobs include positions in libraries, research centers, or affiliated hospitals, occasionally extending beyond campus boundaries. For roles that involve public health, such as those in hospitals, a medical examination may be required.

Primary employers on campus include the institution itself, student organizations, faculty members, or private companies that provide campus services. Entrepreneurship is also possible if you own a business operating on campus.
