Full-Time International Students in Canada

In Canada, international students actively pursuing a full-time education at post-secondary institutions have the unique privilege of engaging in employment within their academic environment without the need to secure a separate work permit. Maintaining a valid study permit, these students may embrace on-campus employment opportunities as an integral part of their academic journey.

The scope of on-campus work available to international students encompasses roles such as teaching and research assistants, further enhancing their academic and professional experience. Working within the university or college’s premises falls under the ‘on-campus’ work category, thus ensuring that the employment activities are confined within the establishment’s physical or virtual space.

For students enrolled at institutes with multiple campuses, the permission to undertake on-campus work extends across all campuses situated in the same municipality. Conversely, institutions spanning across diverse cities limit students exclusively to the campus where their full-time enrollment is recognized.

Moreover, if international students find employment at locations that maintain a formal relationship with their educational institution, such work is considered an extension of on-campus employment, thus exempted from a work permit.

Prior to embarking on any employment venture, it is mandatory for full-time international students to apply for and obtain a Social Insurance number. The prerequisites for this application include not only a valid study permit but also an official contract of employment, laying the groundwork for a seamless integration into the Canadian workforce.

International students can further explore their employment options and navigate the essentials of working in Canada by consulting with PL Immigration, which delivers tailored immigration services for those looking to establish academic and professional roots in Canada.

Employment Opportunities on Campus

In Canada, you can start working on-campus jobs only once your academic program begins. It’s important to note that you cannot begin work before your studies kick off. Your study permit must explicitly state that you are permitted to work either on-campus or off-campus while pursuing your education. You are eligible to work on-campus in Canada without the need for a separate work permit if:

Having a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN) is mandatory.

Part-Time Students Working Full-Time in Canada

If you were a full-time student throughout the earlier semesters of your program but switched to part-time status in your final semester to finish your courses, you are allowed to work unlimited hours on-campus during this period.

Guidelines for Off-Campus Work Situations

Here are the circumstances under which you must cease working on campus:

Once you resume full-time studies and meet all on-campus work qualifications, you regain eligibility to work on campus. On-campus employment allows you to work in any facility located in your primary school campus. If your institution has multiple campuses, you are generally restricted to working on the campus where you are enrolled. However, exceptions are available if you are a teaching or research assistant or if your employment is tied to a research project.

Typical on-campus jobs include positions in libraries, research centers, or affiliated hospitals, occasionally extending beyond campus boundaries. For roles that involve public health, such as those in hospitals, a medical examination may be required.

Primary employers on campus include the institution itself, student organizations, faculty members, or private companies that provide campus services. Entrepreneurship is also possible if you own a business operating on campus.
