Program Length and Certification: The course of study should last a minimum of six months and lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
Compliance with Study Permit: The student must adhere to all the conditions on their study permit.
Hour Limitation: The student cannot work more than 20 hours a week during an active study semester.

Students who have successfully completed their studies can work off-campus while holding a valid study permit and having applied for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) within 90 days of completing their program. Should the PGWP application be denied, they are required to discontinue working immediately.

However, it’s essential that both you and your potential employer verify that you are authorized to work off-campus without needing a separate work permit. Starting work without meeting the necessary conditions can result in having to leave the country. Employment in Canada is only permissible after your academic program has commenced. Your study permit will specify if off-campus work is allowed during your studies. If you qualify to work off-campus, a work permit won’t be required.

To be eligible for off-campus work without a work permit, you must meet these criteria:

Be enrolled as a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI)
Have commenced your academic program
Your study program must be a minimum of six months in duration and result in a certificate, diploma, or degree
Possess a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Off-Campus Work Opportunities for Part-Time Students

Eligibility Requirements for Part-Time Students:

You must fulfill all the eligibility criteria typically required of full-time students, with the exception that you are studying part-time.
Your part-time enrollment is due to being in the final stages of your program, and you do not need a full course load to complete your degree. Previously, you should have been studying full-time in your Canadian educational program until your last semester.

Remember, if you are not actively pursuing your studies, are in the process of transferring schools, or taking an authorized break from your studies, you are not permitted to work off-campus. You can start or resume work only when you actively continue your education.

What to Do If Your Study Permit Lacks Work Authorization

Are you eager to gain work experience off-campus, but your study permit doesn’t include the necessary work conditions? Don’t worry—if you qualify for off-campus work, you can have these conditions added to your study permit without any additional fees. Before you apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), you’ll need to request an amendment to your study permit to include work conditions.

When You Can’t Work Off Campus Without a Permit

There are certain situations where you are not eligible to work off-campus without obtaining a separate work permit:

Your study permit explicitly states that you’re not allowed to work off-campus during your studies.
You are only enrolled in a program for learning French or English as a second language.
You are taking general interest courses.
You are completing prerequisite courses required for enrollment in a full-time program.
Your circumstances have changed, and you no longer meet the criteria to work off-campus.
