Practical Experience and Funding Your Education in Canada

Embark on a rewarding journey to enhance your career prospects while pursuing your education in a vibrant learning environment. International students in Canada have the opportunity to work part-time to gain solid work experience and earn additional income to manage their expenses. It’s important to demonstrate financial readiness to cover your tuition and living costs before your arrival. However, Canada’s diverse student work permit programs are designed to open pathways for international students and their spouses or common law partners to actively participate in the Canadian workforce. Engaging in employment during your study tenure can significantly bolster your professional network and potentially pave the way for permanent residence upon completion of your academic program.

On-Campus Employment Opportunities

For international students aiming to work within their educational institution, there’s no need to obtain an additional work permit if the following criteria are met:

Hold a valid study permit.
Enroll as a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary public institution such as a college, university, or in Quebec, a CEGEP, or at a private Quebec college that aligns with public institution regulations and receives at least 50% funding from government grants, or a Canadian private institution authorized to confer degrees under provincial legislation.
Obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Off-Campus Work Privileges

International students can pursue employment off their academic campuses under the following conditions:

Maintain a valid study permit.
Register as a full-time student at an approved learning institution, which includes post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training programs, or secondary-level vocational training programs in Quebec.
Engage in an educational program that is a minimum of six months in duration and culminates in a degree, diploma, or certificate.
Limit work hours to 20 per week during academic sessions and avail themselves of full-time employment during scheduled academic breaks, such as the winter, summer, and spring holidays.

Work placements, internships, or co-op terms that are integral to certain academic courses necessitate obtaining a work permit to fulfill these program requirements.

Exploring Canada: Travel and Employment
