Guide to International Work Opportunities in Canada for Youth

Young individuals from nations with an established Youth Mobility Agreement with Canada might qualify for IEC work permits, offering a unique chance for those aged 18-35 to explore work opportunities in Canada. These work permits are a special exemption from the typical Labor Market Impact Assessment—Canada’s standard method for evaluating the influence of foreign workers on the domestic job scene. Instead, the International Experience Canada program fosters stronger economic, cultural, and social connections with partner nations, presenting different pathways to secure a work permit for an enriching international experience.

Embark on a Working Adventure

The Working Holiday program grants you a flexible open work permit, with a validity ranging from one to two years depending on your nationality. This permit is your ticket to employment freedom, letting you work for nearly any employer across the vast expanse of Canada.

Ideal for those:

Professional Growth Through Work Experience

For ambitious young professionals eager to expand their international career horizons, the Young Professionals category offers a tailored opportunity. An employer-specific work permit is within reach if you’ve secured a position that aligns with your career advancement goals.

Tailored Work Authorization for Individual Employers

A tailored work authorization, also known as an employer-specific work permit, is a legal document that restricts a foreign national’s employment to a specific employer in Canada. It details the worker’s role, the location where the work will be performed, and the valid timeframe for the permitted employment.

Under the International Experience Canada (IEC) initiative, opportunities exist for Young Professionals and those participating in the International Co-op (Internship) program. These individuals may have the flexibility to work at various locations for the same employer, provided that each site functions under a single business number registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). For such arrangements, the various addresses and the associated CRA business number must be included in the initial offer of employment documentation. It is imperative for the job title, responsibilities, and salary to remain constant across the different work settings.

Candidates in the Young Professionals or International Co-op (Internship) category are obligated to secure employment that correlates with their academic training or professional work experience while in Canada.

Occasionally, circumstances may necessitate a change in employers for those exclusively tied to a single employer through their work permit. Should this occur, participants are required to furnish new employment details and a valid rationale for the shift, such as organizational shutdown, to the authorities before applying for a new permit. A case processing agent will then make a discretionary assessment on the amendment request.

In instances where a permit alteration is sought after the work permit’s issuance, any adjustments to the employment duration will be made according to the relevant bilateral agreements, deducting any time already spent under the original permit.

Qualifications for Participation in the IEC Youth Travel and Work Program

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

It’s important to note that the maximum age limit and specific requirements for eligibility may differ by country.

Understanding the Functionality of PL Immigration’s Work Permit System

PL Immigration administers its programs through a system known as the Expression of Interest/Invitation to Apply (EOI/ITA) model. Prospective applicants are required to set a profile indicating their interest in participating. To progress from this preliminary stage and actually submit a full application, an individual must first secure an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Occasionally, there are circumstances under which the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) might approve the extension of a work permit for participants within the PL Immigration framework. This extension would allow the work permit holder to reach the maximum duration permitted in a given category.

It is generally established that extensions are not typically granted under the PL Immigration regulations. Nonetheless, under particular circumstances, participants might have the opportunity to prolong their work permits beyond the original duration granted upon their arrival in Canada by the customs officials. The instances when this may occur include specific conditions and categories which will be further detailed below.
