Understanding the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The Post-Graduation Work Permit, or PGWP, is a valuable opportunity for international students who have graduated from certain Canadian educational programs. This open work permit is designed to help graduates gain important work experience in Canada.
With a PGWP, graduates have the freedom to work for any employer, in any industry, and at any location throughout Canada. This flexibility is crucial for those looking to eventually settle permanently in the country.
Many use the PGWP as a strategic stepping stone toward obtaining permanent residency through Canadian immigration pathways such as Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
The duration of the PGWP is contingent upon the length of the study program completed by the graduate, with a maximum validity of up to three years.
PGWP-Eligible Programs: Requirements and Criteria
Essential Requirements for PGWP Program Eligibility
To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) through PL Immigration, your program in Canada must satisfy these criteria:
Designated Learning Institution (DLI): Your academic program must be provided by a Canadian institution recognized as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). It’s important to note that not all courses at DLIs are eligible for PGWP, so confirm this with your institution.
Program Duration: Your course must have a minimum duration of 8 months or, for Quebec qualifications, 900 hours. Programs shorter than this do not meet the eligibility criteria.
Field of Study: For University Programs (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate): There are no restrictions related to your field of study. For Non-University Programs: Some may require graduation in fields tied to occupations experiencing long-term shortages, such as healthcare, STEM, or trades. This requirement is only applicable if your study permit application is submitted on or after November 1, 2024.
Full-Time Student Status: It is necessary to maintain your status as a full-time student throughout your program. Exceptions are made for your final semester or if you have approved leaves.
Eligible Programs by Type of Institution
University-Level Programs: Eligibility: PL Immigration ensures that students enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs are eligible, irrespective of the field of study. Minimum Duration: Programs must be no shorter than 8 months.
Colleges and Other Non-University Institutions: Eligibility Until October 31, 2024: There are no restrictions based on the field of study. Eligibility From November 1, 2024: Students must graduate in a designated eligible field. Details on specific fields provided by PL Immigration. Minimum Duration: Programs should last at least 8 months, or 900 hours if completed in Quebec.
Flight Training Schools: Eligibility: Programs leading to a Canadian commercial pilot’s license or an instructor’s rating, along with securing a job offer from a flight school, are supported. Minimum Duration: Courses must span at least 8 months or 900 hours.
Combination of Programs: For those who complete more than one Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligible program, PL Immigration allows you to combine the duration of these programs to qualify for a lengthier PGWP. Each program must comply with all stated eligibility requirements.
Programs Ineligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
At PL Immigration, we aim to provide clear guidance on Canadian immigration processes. Understanding which educational programs qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is crucial. You will NOT qualify for a PGWP if:
- Your study program is shorter than 8 months, or for Quebec-specific qualifications, less than 900 hours.
- You have participated in:
- An English or French as a Second Language (ESL/FSL) course.
- Courses aimed at general interest or personal development.
- Any program sponsored by the Canadian government, including initiatives like the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program or programs from the Organization of American States Fellowship.
- You have already obtained a PGWP following a previous course of study.
Programs Needing Specific Field of Study for Eligibility
For those applying for a study permit on or after November 1, 2024, it’s crucial to note that if you’ve completed a non-university program, your chosen field of study must match one of these key sectors to be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP):
- Agriculture and Agri-Food
- Education
- Health Care
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
- Trade
- Transportation
Canada categorizes post-secondary education programs based on the field of study using a system known as the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP).
How the Length of a Canadian PGWP is Determined
PL Immigration is here to guide you through understanding how the duration of a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada is determined. This invaluable work permit grants international graduates the chance to gain Canadian work experience, enhancing their Canadian immigration journey. Here’s a breakdown based on the length of your study program:
Programs Shorter Than 8 Months:
Unfortunately, these programs do not meet the eligibility criteria for a PGWP.
Programs Lasting Between 8 Months and 2 Years:
For these durations, the length of your PGWP will be equivalent to the duration of your study program. For instance, if you complete a 9-month program, you will receive a 9-month PGWP.
Programs of 2 Years or Longer:
Graduates from these programs qualify for a PGWP valid for up to 3 years.
Master’s Programs (8 Months or More):
Starting February 15, 2024, a master’s program that lasts 8 months or longer will make you eligible for a PGWP that can last up to 3 years, even if the program is less than 2 years.
Combined Programs:
If you have completed multiple qualifying programs, the total combined length of these programs will decide the validity of your PGWP.
Special Considerations for Remote Studies and Canadian Immigration
Time Spent Studying Online from Outside Canada (During COVID-19):
If you completed online studies from March 2020 to August 31, 2022, these can be included in your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility with PL Immigration’s guidance.
Changes After December 31, 2023:
Starting from this date, any online education completed outside Canada will not be considered for PGWP.
Studying Within Canada:
Up until August 31, 2024, it is required to complete at least half of your academic program in Canada, either through online classes or in-person attendance.
As of September 1, 2024, you will need to ensure that at least 50% of your studies are conducted in a physical classroom setting.
