Established by IRCC in the year 2008, the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) initiative emerged as a strategic avenue designed to facilitate the transition of adept temporary workers and foreign graduates into permanent residents within Canada.
Over time, the Canadian Experience Class has blossomed into a principal channel for proficient individuals seeking to join Canada’s dynamic workforce and society. Celebrated for its effectiveness, the program is applauded not only by the government authorities but also by local communities, business leaders, and the aspiring immigrants it serves.
Key Advantages of the Canadian Experience Class
At the core of the CEC program lies Canada’s objective, shared by both federal and provincial tiers of governance, to convert the dreams of ambitious foreign workers and international scholars into a Canadian future. This goal is strongly backed by comprehensive studies and data from IRCC, Statistics Canada, and various scholarly works, which support the notion that skilled workers with Canadian experience effortlessly meld into the country’s professional environments. This seamless integration is attributed to the high ‘human capital’ standards demanded by the program, such as youthful vigor, robust educational backgrounds, relevant work experience, coupled with the invaluable social and professional networks developed within Canada. Such a blend significantly propels the success rate of CEC immigrants in the job market.

Secondly, individuals with prior Canadian experience gain leverage in garnering additional points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) when they apply through Express Entry. This effectively boosts their likelihood of securing permanent residence.
Another remarkable advantage of the CEC is the accelerated timeline for acquiring permanent residence status. Successful Express Entry applicants through the CEC pathway often celebrate their new status as Canadian permanent residents in a mere six months.
Lastly, PL Immigration notes a unique convenience offered by the CEC: unlike other Express Entry streams, eligible candidates under the CEC are exempt from furnishing proofs of financial sustenance — a notable edge that facilitates a smoother transition to permanent residency for many.
Unlock the gateway to a promising future in Canada with PL Immigration, where we guide and support your aspirations through the Canadian Experience Class program — a pathway tailored for your success.
Aspiring to become a permanent resident under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) necessitates meeting specific criteria:
A year of work experience translates to 1,560 hours of skilled labor which can be accumulated via a combination of full-time or part-time employment. During the application process, candidates may legally reside in Canada. However, PL Immigration also caters to individuals no longer living in Canada, provided their application is submitted within three years of their Canadian employment ending.
Eligibility for CEC operates on a simple pass/fail structure—if you meet the necessary criteria, you’re added to the Express Entry pool for potential selection. It’s important to note that self-employment and experience gained during full-time study (such as a cooperative work term) are not recognized for CEC eligibility.
Step 1 – Accumulate Eligible Canadian Work Experience
To qualify for the Canadian Experience Class, it is essential to have accumulated at least 12 months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada within the three years before you apply. Note that work undertaken during self-employment or while you were enrolled as a full-time student is not considered eligible. That said, experience gained under temporary work permits, such as those issued for the Working Holiday Visa, is valid for this purpose.
Step 2 – Fulfill the Basic Requirements
Understanding the nuances of the CEC eligibility criteria is paramount. The following points highlight the essentials:
Your proficiency in either English or French must be proven through an authorized language examination like the IELTS for English or TEF for French. Your results determine your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. Additionally, if your education was outside of Canada, you’re encouraged to apply for an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) early in the process, as it may take some time to complete.
Step 3 – Create an Express Entry Profile
To proceed with the CEC pathway, your next action is to establish an online profile within the Express Entry system. This profile is your key to entering the candidate pool managed by the Federal Express Entry program and is integral for the CEC route.
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) assigns a score to your profile, based on criteria including age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience, with a maximum possible score of 1,200. Competing in the Express Entry pool, your profile is ranked against others for potential invitations.
Regular draws by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) identify the highest-ranked candidates and extend invitations for permanent residency.
Step 4 – Prepare Required Documentation
Receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) propels you to the next critical stage – assembling all necessary documents for your PR application, which must be completed within the 60-day time frame. This includes getting a criminal background check and undergoing a medical examination to comply with Canadian immigration requirements.
Step 5 – Receive Your Permanent Residence Confirmation
With PL Immigration, experience streamlined processing of your CEC application – often within a four-month window. Following approval, the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document marks the final step in validating your status when you touch down in Canada, transitioning to your new life as a permanent resident.
Harness the expertise of PL Immigration to ease through the CEC application process and lay the groundwork for your new beginning Canada.
